Taking a different approach towards pest control

Integrated Pest Management

Dealing with pests such as cockroaches or ants infestations in your home can be a nuisance. While there are various ways to deal with pests in your home (e.g. home remedies, sprays), some people who just cannot seem to truly get rid of pests would prefer to call in the experts. After all, these pest control services are conducted by professionals who have the know-how and experience in dealing with pests.

Many such qualified services just focus on removing the pest from your home through the use of chemicals or other methods. They come to your home, they inspect the damage done, and they implement certain solutions. For instance, tracking down the nest of the pest and destroying it. While this may prove effective (and the service does get the job done), there is also another way pest control is done by certain companies.

Introducing the Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

In this approach, pests aren’t solely eradicated from your home, but rather, there is more focus towards pest prevention and the controlling of pests. Here, environmental friendliness is emphasized on. Hence, uses of pesticides are minimised.

The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) does not give a single method for pest control but employs an integration of multiple methods based on site information that has been gathered. In this integration, there are four tiers being implemented. These four tiers are: (1) identifying pests and monitoring progress, (2) setting action thresholds (based on pest population level), (3) preventing pests by removing conditions that might attract them, (4) controlling pests through various methods.

Why use the Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?

It may seem quite tedious to implement the IPM as it not only has many steps in its process, but takes into consideration many factors. Wouldn’t it be much easier to just destroy the pests’ colony/nests and remove them all in one go?

While implementing the IPM does take more effort and time, it helps protect human health, reduce the number of pesticide applications and helps save cost in the long run because the root cause of the problem has been dealt with.
